Supergrass gets inside the head of one of Britain's most enigmatic and successful supergrasses. The programme explores the life and inner workings of the one time gangster Paul Grimes. When his oldest son died from a h...展开eroin overdose Grimes launched a dangerous and audacious campaign against the people he held responsible; the criminals that controlled the city's drug trade. He started to gather evidence on them and inform Customs and Excise. His evidence was to become instrumental in the trials of two of Britain's most dangerous drug barons.
The story is based in Liverpool - the head quarters of Curtis 'Cocky' Warren and John Haase's drug empires. Paul Grimes used his status in the underworld to get close to both men, and then betray them.
Grimes shows no remorse, or fear as he recounts how he trod the tightrope between satisfying the demands of his Customs handlers and maintaining his credibility as an upright villain in a violent underworld.
Braving possible attacks Grimes revisits the very places he worked and laughs off the threats and taunts of 'grass'. He happily shows the threatening graffiti that decorates the walls of Liverpool's city and despite the predictable threats and a price on his head Grimes refuses to be intimidated, maintaining that he did what was right.
This documentary also explores the role of Michael Howard MP as Home Secretary, and how he granted John Hasse a royal pardon, after Haase had been caught with over 50 kilos of heroin, only to start re-offending almost immediately. Five years after the Home Secretary's royal pardon John Hasse was convicted of guns and drug running.
Years of looking over his shoulder are now beginning to take their toll. With Curtis Warren and Haase's release on the horizon, Grimes is set to leave his native Liverpool and enter the anonymity of the Witness Protection Programme.
