A brilliant documentary featuring the remote medieval monasteries of Mount Athos, the centre of Eastern Orthodox Monasticism. Since medieval times Mount Athos has been an autonomous estury which houses and guards many artefacts and monuments of religions, national and artistic value. As an institution Mount Athos is, and has been, the chief standard bearer of Orthodox Christianity.
The city of Mount Athos is located in the entire third, eastern and most beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki, called the peninsula of Athos. It is the only place in Greece, that is completely dedicated to prayer and worship of God. For this reason, it is called the Holy Mount.
The Holy Mount is about 50 Km in length, 8 to 12 Km in width and it covers an area of about 350 square kilometres. The borders of the monasterial city are defined on the ground by an imaginary line that starts from the location "FRAGOKASTRO" in the West coast and reaches the cape "ARAPIS" in the opposite end.
The Holy Mountain or Athos is a peninsula in northern Greece which has been the major center of Orthodox monasticism for over a thousand years. This unique documentary video features the renovation of St. Andrew's skete in Karies, the capital of the Holy Mountain. It also shows other monasteries, sketes, and an ascent to the peak of Mount Athos. Winner of Best Documentary Award at Moscow's Golden Knight International Film Festival 2000. Included with the DVD is a CD with the soundtrack from the video. Duration: 70 min. Language: Greek, with subtitles in English, French or German. Produced by Aegis Film.
