Yellow Bird Pictures is developing a feature film about Georg Close
Elser’s attempt to kill Adolf Hitler Close
Georg Elser's attempt to kill Adolf Hitler is the theme of a feature film currently in preparation by...展开the Munich company Yellow Bird Pictures in association with Delphi Medien. Léonie-Claire and Fred Breinersdorfer, who wrote the Oscar-nominated feature film Sophie Scholl - The Last Days, are already working on the script. Producers Oliver Schündler, Fred Breinersdorfer and Boris Ausserer intend to begin filming in 2012, with Torsten C. Fischer (Romy) penciled in as director. The project will also involve the film departments of SWR and ARTE.
Johann Georg Elser, born in 1903 in the town of Hermaringen in Baden-Württemberg, planted a bomb on 8th November 1939 in the Bürgerbräukeller beer cellar in Munich; it was intended to kill Adolf Hitler. A man like millions of other Germans launched an attack on the most powerful figure in the world, who was at the peak of his power, attempting to eliminate him and the dictatorship he headed: it was an attempt unrivalled in history to rid the world of a tyrant.
Elser lacked the education of the more famous members of the White Rose resistance group; he didn't have the same background as the officers and aristocrats who tried to eliminate Hitler in 1944. He was a man of the people who wanted to put a violent end to Hitler's yearning for war in order to "avoid further bloodshed", as he later testified to the Gestapo. What was it that he saw in his rural home in Swabia that others didn't recognize? Why did he arrive at a conclusion that no other German dared to? Why didn't he join the Nazi party or just submit passively, like so many others? How did he end up becoming a solitary resistance fighter who is to this very day unfairly overshadowed by other resistance movements?
The film attempt to find answers to these questions. It is based on the latest research and documentary records kept by the Gestapo about Elser's interrogation in Berlin, which came to light in 1964. Additional research is currently under way.
